In the pharmaceutical (Pharma) industry, the research and development (R&D) process is a critical stage in drug development. Pharmaceutical R&D is the study and development of novel medicines in the pharmaceutical industry. Understanding the disease and identifying a target (typically a receptor site on a cell) that can be impacted by a therapeutic molecule are some of the steps involved. Pharmaceutical R&D is crucial to policy because it serves as a justification for high prices and increased protections from normal price competition, which has historically been a source of innovation. The link between medicine prices, drug firm costs, and the rate and direction of innovation has piqued the public's interest in pharmaceutical R&D.
